1982

Founded in Clonmel, County Tipperary in 1982 by Michael Ahearne Sr., Michael Ahearne & Associates began as a focused provider of Architectural, Civil, Structural, and Fire Engineering solutions in Ireland and the UK. Our modest beginnings were characterized by dedication and ambition, paving the way for the realization of grander dreams and aspirations.”
1998
“With a growing demand for Fire Safety specialists, Michael Ahearne Sr., drawing on his wealth of experience as a former Chief Fire Officer, established a new office on Pembroke Road, Dublin. Joined by his son, Michael Ahearne Jr., a qualified Structural and Fire Engineer, they introduced cutting-edge tools such as Computational Fluid Dynamics for fire and smoke modelling, and Vulcan for structural fire engineering analysis. These innovative techniques allowed AFEC to develop solutions that transcended prescriptive code requirements while ensuring the safety of their designs through rigorous modelling.
Thanks to an unwavering dedication to quality, AFEC’s Fire Engineering Department rapidly emerged as one of Ireland’s most reputable Fire Engineering practices. This notable accomplishment stems from their successful execution of intricate fire strategies on both domestic and international fronts.”
2014
Upon completing his studies at the Architectural Department of University College Dublin and accumulating valuable experience in various countries, including Vietnam, Kazakhstan, and the Middle East, David Ahearne joined forces with Michael Ahearne Jr. at AFEC. Together, they sought to broaden the firm’s horizons by introducing a comprehensive architectural division to AFEC.
Recognizing the potential for synergy between disciplines, AFEC continued to evolve by incorporating Mechanical and Electrical Engineering services into its diverse portfolio. This strategic expansion not only complemented the existing fire division but also reinforced AFEC’s commitment to providing clients with holistic, integrated solutions across the spectrum of construction design.

Ahearne Future Engineering Consultants (AFEC) has undergone a rebranding, reflecting our remarkable growth and evolving expertise. As an internationally recognized multidisciplinary firm, we specialize in Fire Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Architecture, Project Management, and Sustainability. With a global presence, including offices in Ireland, the UK, and Vietnam, AFEC is dedicated to innovative engineering solutions and personalized client service.
Our commitment to ESG strategies and exceptional staff enables our continued growth and improvement. AFEC focuses on environmentally responsible designs, aligning with the EU 20-20-20 emissions reduction targets and promoting sustainable buildings in compliance with LEED, BREEAM, and NZEB certification standards.
